Odd Seam Archive — Research Pack

Independent research on unexplained aerial sightings worldwide (not US-only), compiled for the Odd Seam Archive site. Everything here is sourced; every factual claim traces to a link — most to sources.md, and, for material added by the timeline build (data/timeline-events.csv, data/pursue-records.csv), to a source_url given inline on the row itself rather than duplicated into sources.md. sources.md was not updated when the timeline expansion added roughly two dozen rows to timeline.md, and rows added by the 23 September 2026 expansion are annotated there directly; check the row's own source_url for that material.

Compiled: 19 September 2026. Timeline expansion (timeline.md, data/timeline-events.csv, data/pursue-records.csv): 20 September 2026, see docs/timeline-feature-2026-09-20.md. Second timeline expansion (22 rows, mostly the institutions track's foreign bodies and the modern US offices): 23 September 2026, see docs/timeline-expansion-2026-09-23.md.

Companion pack — cryptozoology

crypto/ is a second, separately sourced pack on cryptids (reported animals science has not verified), built to the same conventions for the land-and-water register of the site: official acts, laws, genetic tests, and the eight animals that turned out to be real. Start at crypto/README.md; the material most likely to be quoted is crypto/02-official-bodies-and-law.md (Sweden protected Storsjöodjuret as an endangered species in 1986; Bhutan's Sakteng sanctuary was established in part for the migoi; Nepal had a Yeti permit regime in 1959) and crypto/04-what-turned-out-real.md. The saltwater tier lives in crypto/cases/06-marine-and-coastal.md: the Atlantic sea-serpent record, the ocean-sound hydrophone files, and the marine animals that were real (colossal squid 2007, giant squid filmed 2012, megamouth shark 1976) — whose evidence, being genetic, is the strongest in either pack. The land register's institutional material is in crypto/cases/07-land-register.md: a royal hunt and a sworn notary's report, a police force's FOI'd incident log, a colonial natural-history society's correspondence, a town council that paid money per sighting, a museum gecko identified by DNA in 2023, and two hoaxes with the prices still attached.

Headline findings

  1. The phenomenon is global but the paper trail is not. Roughly a dozen countries have run official investigations; several operate bodies today — France (GEIPAN), Chile (CEFAA) and Uruguay (CRIDOVNI) continuously since the 1970s–90s, plus Argentina (CEFAE, 2011) and Peru (DIFAA, revived 2013) more recently. Most of the rest closed their desks between 1995 and 2010 (UK 2009, Canada 1995, US Blue Book 1969).
  2. The "unexplained" residue is small and roughly stable across countries. France, with the cleanest public statistics, classifies ~3.3% of investigated cases as unidentified after investigation, and ~32% as unidentifiable for lack of data (02, 03).
  3. The strongest cases are sensor + multiple-witness, not story-driven. Belgium 1989–90 (F-16 radar lock), Tehran 1976 (F-4 instrumentation loss), Brazil 1986 ("Night of the UFOs"), Chile 2014 (9-minute IR video) are the ones that survive scrutiny best — and each still has a contested conventional explanation.
  4. Reporting volume is rising, resolution rate is rising faster. AARO resolved 114 of 319 new reports in FY2025 and cleared 256 older cases, driven mainly by new satellite-flare modelling (03).
  5. Two landmark cases are photograph-led and still officially unexplained: Trans-en-Provence 1981 (physical trace analysis) and Calvine 1990 (the "best UFO photo", surfaced 2022).
